Chinese Names That Mean Light, Moon and Water
6 min read · 2026-11-05
Light, moon and water are the three most requested name themes — and also the easiest to get wrong, because the obvious characters are often common nouns rather than names. Here is how to choose well within each theme.
Light: 光, 明, 昭, 曦, 晗
Light characters suggest clarity and openness. 明 and 昭 are classical and work in many names; 曦 and 晗 are softer and more modern.
Avoid stacking two light characters. 明明 or 昭昭 reads like a repetition, not a name.
- 昭宁 — clear and calm
- 晗 — first light before sunrise
- 景 — bright, also scenery
Moon: 月, 望舒, 婵, 皓
The moon carries distance and quiet. 望舒 is the charioteer of the moon in the Songs of Chu, which gives the name a story beyond its sound.
月 on its own is usually too plain as a given name; it works better as part of a phrase or paired with a softer character.
- 望舒 — the moon's charioteer
- 月白 — moonlight white
- 皓 — bright, white
Water: 清, 澄, 澜, 溪, 润
Water names suggest calm, depth and flexibility. 清 and 澄 are clear-water characters; 澜 is a wave, more dynamic; 溪 is a stream, quieter.
Be careful with 海 and 江: they are common and can make a name sound like a place or a company.
- 清越 — clear and resonant
- 澜 — a wave
- 溪云 — stream and cloud
Putting a theme together
The strongest names usually combine two different images: light with water (清曜), moon with a plant (桂月), water with a sound (溪声).
Two characters from the same image family tend to blur together. Contrast is what makes a name memorable.
