About Chinese Names

A small studio, independently run.

Chinese Names is a naming studio for people outside China. We build names with sound, meaning and a source — not transliterations that only look Chinese.

Why we built this

Most tools turn “Emily” into 艾米丽: a phonetic copy that sounds foreign in Chinese and carries no meaning. We wanted the opposite — a name a person can introduce themselves with and feel proud of.

So we start from the surname and character corpus, the classical poems, and the sound of the whole name, then write a report that explains the choice.

How it works

You enter your English name, gender preference, name length and style. We suggest names from a curated pool, pairing each given name with a surname that sounds natural.

A paid report explains one chosen name in depth: surname origin, character meaning, a real line of classical poetry, pronunciation, usage scenarios and alternate characters.

Where the names come from

Our pool is built by hand from the Book of Songs, the Songs of Chu, Tang poetry and Song lyrics, plus modern naming conventions. Every entry with a classical source is checked against the original line.

We do not invent poems, and we do not use machine-generated names without review.

What we are not

We are not a fortune-telling service. We do not predict luck, destiny, marriage or wealth, and we do not use five-element or zodiac analysis. The report is a cultural and linguistic explanation, not a prediction.

Names are suggestions, not legal registrations. We cannot guarantee that a name is unused, registrable as a trademark, or acceptable in every context.

Who we are

Chinese Names is operated by 江西码上云信息技术有限公司 (Jiangxi Mashangyun Information Technology Co., Ltd.), based in Jiangxi, China.

We are a small team: writers, language researchers and engineers. If you have a question, a real person answers it.
